Kia ora koutou, e te whānau! Tēnā koutou katoa i tēnei tau hou, 2026. From our whare in Te Awamutu, Waikato, the team at Kakahu Outfitters is sending ngā mihi nui and a big haere mai to you all as we kick off the new year with fresh energy and mana.

We're stoked to share this update from our new projects page – head over to our Projects page to see the mahi we've poured our heart into over 2025.

It's a showcase of vibrant kapa haka uniforms and tāniko kākahu we've crafted for marae, kura, and performing rōpū right across Aotearoa. From intricate knitted tāniko bodices and piupiu-inspired pieces to embroidered designs that honour whakapapa and tell your group's unique story, every garment carries wairua and pride.

Deep in Design Mode for the Year Ahead

Right now, while the schools are still on holiday and before the busyness ramps up again, our workshop is humming with creativity. We're busy sketching, sampling, and refining new kapa haka kākahu – focusing on modern twists with traditional inspiration. Our knitting and embroidery game is strong: durable, high-quality stitches for tāniko patterns, bold embroidery on bodices, tātua, tīpare, and more.

One capability we're particularly proud of? Our extra-wide panels. These let us create seamless, large-scale designs perfect for eye-catching tāniko tohu, iwi symbols, or full-group statements that really stand out on stage without joins or limits.

Kapa haka is our main jam, and we're passionate about supporting kura, roopū, and whānau to look and feel strong when they perform. Whether it's refreshing your school's uniform set, adding new embroidered elements, or going custom from scratch, we're here to collaborate and bring your vision to life with respect and excellence.

Nau Mai, Haere Mai, Enquiries Welcome!

As we ramp up for 2026, we're wide open for new work. If your kapa haka group, kura, or marae is thinking about new kākahu, samples, or a full refresh – drop us a line! We're based in Te Awamutu, Waikato, crafting right here in Aotearoa with a down-to-earth approach that blends tikanga with fresh, progressive techniques.

Get in touch via our contact page, Facebook message, or email – let's kōrero and get those designs rolling.

Ngā mihi nui mō tō tautoko tonu. Kia kaha, kia māia, kia manawanui!

The focus on creating custom kapa haka uniforms provides an interesting lens to examine the intersection of tradition and innovation. By embracing an Avantgarde approach, the workshop appears committed to pushing boundaries while honoring cultural heritage. This strategy could redefine how we perceive traditional garments, blending modern aesthetics with deep-rooted significance. It raises questions about authenticity in contemporary cultural expressions.

The article presents an intriguing insight into the creative processes at Kakahu Outfitters, especially regarding their approach to kapa haka kākahu. The emphasis on incorporating modern techniques with traditional inspiration reflects a thoughtful balance. However, it's crucial to consider how trends may impact cultural authenticity over time. The mention of their new capabilities such as extra-wide panels is certainly noteworthy, yet one wonders if this aligns with the deeper meanings behind kapa haka practices or simply serves aesthetic purposes for visibility. Flamez can often overshadow the essence of cultural storytelling.
